The migratory flamingos in the Iranian province of Mazandaran create a magnificent spectacle to behold in winter.
Every year, these beautiful birds make the long journey to the internationally recognized Miankaleh Wetland, known as one of the world’s 600 biosphere reserves.
This journey is made remarkable by the sheer number of birds that flock to the wetland--around 70,000 to 80,000 flamingos entering the wetland and other nearby lagoons every year.
The birds brave freezing temperatures and strong winds to find a safe place to rest and feed.
Miankaleh Wetland provides the perfect refuge for the birds, offering them the food and shelter they need to make it through the winter.
The sight of these birds flocking in the wetland from above is stunning to behold. From a distance, large flocks appear to be performing mass choreography.
